One of the best things about going on holiday is being able to leave the stress behind. But don't forget while you're away your home needs protecting! If you're going to leave your home unoccupied for any length of time, it may become obvious to thieves that no one's home. However, there are some proactive steps you can make to ensure your home in safe over the holiday period.

According to a study by Halifax Home Insurance, thieves increase their activity during summer, and there is a 10% increase in domestic burglaries and a 40% increase in outdoor thefts

Keep these 4 key tips in mind next time you go away.

  • Let your neighbours know you're going away. Ideally they can do things like draw the curtains in the evenings and turn some lights on and off, but even if they can't then it's good to let them know anyway so they can keep an eye out for anything or anyone suspicious.

  • Don't post too much on public social media. It can be tempting to update your friends and family with notices that you're going away, and then to update them every step of the way. But if your profile is public then you're also telling potential thieves that no one is home.

  • Don't leave any doors or windows unlocked. It may seem obvious, but it's common to leave windows open or the back door ajar in the summer months. Be sure to double-check that everything is locked up before you go

  • Don't neglect your garage and shed. Even if your home is secured, you may have neglected your garage or shed. If you keep valuable gardening equipment, or other high-value items like bikes, then they may be at risk unless properly secured.

SURE24 offer a range of property/building security products to ensure your home is safe - and that you don't have to worry.

These are our top three products for securing your home:

  • Timer Switches

    - Automating your lights is one of the easiest ways to make your home appear occupied, and one of the best ways to do that is with automated 24 hours timer switches. You can set your lights to come on just after dusk, and to turn off again later in the night.

You don't have to worry about remembering to turn your lights/appliances off and on. The timerswitch will automaically turn everything off at a set time. If you're using the timer switch as an occupancy simulator you can only have the lights on after the sun goes down - eliminating the need to leave the lights on all day.

  • FAKETV

    - FakeTV uses a built-in computer to control super-bright LEDs to produce light of varying intensity and colour that light up a room just like a real television does. From outside a home after dark, you do not see the actual TV. All you can see is coloured light filtering through the curtains. FakeTV does not make a picture, but makes the same sort of flickering light. When people see the light from a television, most people assume someone is home. Just like a real TV, FakeTV fills a room with colour changes, both subtle and dramatic, in thousands of possible shades.

  • Window Alarms

    - With a modern design and easy set-up and installation this is a very simple and effective security product and has been proven time and time again in high volume burglary areas. By attaching to the window in clear sight it not only provides a clear deterrent to anyone attempting to access the property but the siren upon activation alerts the anyone in the area that a break-in is occurring.

Alarms work in two main ways. Firstly, burglars are often looking for the opportunity to break in. Window alarms are often seen as a visual deterrent making the prospect of breaking in less attractive. Secondly if a burglar does attempt to try their luck the alarm will sound alerting people nearby and potentially spooking the potential thief.
